Thank you BLF, for teaching small how to play FISHY! (A long and thrilling game, where one shouts FISHY! and one’s small person flings themselves onto their tummy excitably). Originally played solely in the bath, FISHY! has now been co-opted for small’s most recent incarnation of a bedtime routine.
I say ‘Lie down like Fishy, please’ (shouting is more fun, but strangely less conducive to sleep), small lies down in an extremely fish-like way, closes his eyes and reaches out his hand to hold mine. We hold hands, small eventually drifts off to sleep, I sneak off to eat ice-cream and watch reruns of How I Met Your Mother. And it may take just as long as singing all twelve thousand verses of Silent Night, but it’s so very peaceful. Perhaps he’s given up Silent Night in time for Christmas?
